Before you choice train to Lhasa, you are advised to buy hard sleeper or soft sleeper as it is quite a long time journey at least about 22 hours from the nearest city to Lhasa. Hard seat is a metal seat where all passengers sit next to each other and might not be able to sleep in the night. Hard sleeper costs around RMB 500 according to upper and lower beds, Soft-sleeper is RMB 400 more expensive.
The dining room in the train usually considered to be number 8th or 10th compartment where you will get Chinese cuisines, noodles, soups and some Tibetan dishes. There is also a delivery cart bringing dishes every meal time. Prices are around RMB 20 for any kind meal delivering. For breakfast, they generally serve pickles, eggs, bread and rise porridge which costs around RMB 10.
If you need to charge your electronic devices on the train, there are electric outlets in the corridors of each compartment. In the train you better bring with you A,C plugs if you don’t have.
Trains to Lhasa are a kind of well designed and pressurised to prevent altitude sickness for the passengers. Once you arrived at Lhasa (3650 meters), you need to stay and visit in the city 3 to 4 days as all the tourists do for acclimatisation before heading into higher plateau.
