The incense contains over 30 natural, medicinal ingredients including saffron, red and white sandal wood, arura, camphor, cloves, manmade musk, and cardamom. Ingredients may be pulverized through a stone grinding process and then slowly mixed with water, or mixed after boiling and distillation. Animal ingredients are sterilized and detoxified prior to preparation. Some herbs must be prepared in accordance with medical tradition. For instance, as musk is a substance which may be harmful to pregnant or nursing women when used alone, it should be carefully prepared in balanced concoctions with ingredients which will neutralize its negative properties. The potent, traditional incense ingredients used at Mindrol Ling are renowned for their ability to bring forth auspicious energies.
In accordance with traditional incense production, harmful scented chemicals are never used. For this reason, Mindrol Ling’s incense is revered not only for making Buddhist offerings, but for its health benefits and medicinal properties. It has the power to mitigate conditions such as anxiety and depression, and is a powerful air purificant.
Mindrol Ling Monastery is a primary, historic center location in the production of traditional incense and even once produced incense for the imperial palace. In 2012, Mindrol Ling’s incense production was included in the Tibet Autonomous Region’s official list of ‘intangible cultural heritage’ and in 2013, the incense achieved brand status as a famous regional product. As Mindro Ling incense combines over 400 years of Tibetan craftmanship and medical knowledge, its production process was named as one of Tibet’s most unique by China’s Ethnic Minorities Handicraft Craft Commission. Mindrol Ling incense has been widely featured on national media such as episodes 4, 7, and 9 of CCTV, as well as in the newspaper, Tibet Daily, and the online publication China’s Tibet.
