Amnye Machen Trek

Mt. Amnye Machen trek offers the best trekking experience in eastern Amdo, the Tibetan area of Qinghai Province. This sacred mountain is being worshipped by Buddhists as well as Bon followers. It is the most famous pilgrimage route and best adventure tour in Amdo. We also can arrange half circumambulation to Amnye Machen kora (for 6 days) to it’s southern part, which has an absolutely gorgeous and untouched landscape.

The local mountain god Amnye Machen is to be subsumed under Amdo of three major Tibet provinces, which other two are U-tsang and Kham. Amdo or Do-med encompasses over one third of the Tibetan plateau and Mt. Amnye Machen is the one and only to impute to be the most sacred mountain in the eastern Tibetan plateau. It has an area size of 660 acre and has 13 peaks, of which the highest peak rises over 6082m above the sea level and the fifth Dalai Lama called it the Ever-white Peak. The rest of the peaks are equally raised over 4900 meters and snow capped all through out the year. You can also consider a 4 days halfway trek around Amnye Machen, which is absolutely one of the best trekking tours in Tibet.

Amnye Machen trek or a kora is not same like other trekking spots as it is much easy to rain and one can not cross rivers without horse, especially, during a raining day. It will be even colder in summer times and sometimes snow on the passes.

Day 1: Arrive in Xi’ning

Altitude: 2300m
Distance: 36km. (from Caojiapu Airport)
Time: ≈ 1hour
Hotel: Lete Youth Hostel

Upon arrival at Xi’ning Caojiapu Airport, your tour guide and driver will meet you and transfer you to the hotel. In the evening, choose between a local Muslim or Tibetan food.

Day 2: Drive to Lake Kokonor (Qinghai lake)

In the morning drive to Lake Kokonor (Chinese: Qinghai Hu), the largest salt water lake in China and a sacred, historic place for Tibetans. A day exploring at the lake is a good chance to experience the diversity of nature and the changes occuring in the environment of the Tibetan Plateau. Interact with locals and feel free to ask questions, your translator will assist you! Prepare for Amnye Machen trek starting from next day.

Day 3: Drive to Lower Tawu (Just below Amnye Machen Mountain)

Hotel: Guesthouse in Lower Tawu

Drive to Lower Tawu via Chabcha town, the capital city of Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. Lower Tawu, a small district below Machen County of Golok Tibet Autonomous prefecture. In the evening, meet your yaks and guides for the Amnye Machen trek.

Day 4: Begin Trek Around Mt. Amnye Machen

Time: ≈ 6hours
Overnight: Camp

Start Amnye Machen Kora Trek. Visit Amnye Machen Cultural Centre which is 5km from Lower Tawu. We will camp at Nakchok-Do.

Day 5: Trek to Chablung Do

Average Altitude: 4300m
Distance: 18km
Time: ≈ 7hours
Overnight: Camp

On the way to Chablong we shall enjoy spectacular views of the Amdo Tibetan Grassland and native flora and fauna. Today, we have the best view of Amnye Machen. At night we will camp outside of the nomadic village of Chablong.

Day 6: Trek to Sherig-Do

Average Altitude: 4200m
Distance: 20km
Time: ≈ 8hours
Overnight: Camp

Trek from Chablung-Do through Chablung Valley and Halung Valley, two narrow valleys along with Dradui River to the right of Mt. Amnye Machen. The terrain is mostly flat and downhill until Sherig-Do.

Day 7: Trek to Tsanak Kamdo

Average Altitude: 4300m
Distance: 22km
Time: ≈ 8 hours
Overnight: Camp

Trek through Gutrang, a slightly long up-valley.

Day 8: Trek to Halong Langri-Chu

Highest Altitude: 4600m
Distance: 24km
Time: ≈ 8 hours
Overnight: Camp

Trek and cross the highest pass of Mt. Amnye Machen. Tamchok Gongkar Pass is 4700 meters it is an amzing view around it as well as the holy mountain. Camp at Langri-chu.

Day 9: Trek to Mowatowa Rocky Valley

Highest Altitude: 4300m
Distance: 20km
Time: ≈ 7 hours
Overnight: Camp

Trek to the rock valley nearby Mowathowa.

Day 10: Trek to Deleni

Highest Average Altitude: 4300m
Distance: 25km
Time: ≈ 8 hours

Today we will reach the most unique spots of the Amnye Machen Kora Trek. We will visit the Meditation Caves and the cliffs of Goku Chenmo which are said to mark the entrance to the palace of the protector Machen Bomra (another name of Mt. Amnye Machen)

Day 11: Trek to Jomolangra

Distance: 14km. Amnye Machen Trek
Time: ≈ 6 hours
Overnight: Guesthouse

Trek down through the Chushen River Gorge and Meet our driver after crossing through Jomolangra Valley. Amnye Machen trek is officially end from here. You can also trek down to Lower Tawu if you wish. Overnight in guesthouse at Lower Tawu.
