Day 1: Arrive in Chengdu. 500 meters

Upon arrival at Chengdu airport, your driver will be waiting for you at the exit gate to facilitate your transfer to the downtown hotel. Should time permit, you’re invited to explore one of Chengdu’s historic streets, adding a touch of local charm to your journey.

Day 2: Chengdu (500m)

Begin your day with a visit to the Chengdu Panda Breeding Base, situated approximately 13km northeast of downtown Chengdu. Renowned as the foremost panda sanctuary globally, this facility is dedicated to the preservation of giant pandas and other endangered species, making it a crucial hub for wildlife conservation efforts.

Day 3: Chengdu – Danba (1860m) 350km. Time Taking = 5-6hrs.

In the morning drive to Danba, passing through the stunning vistas of Mt Kulha, one of the highest peaks in the west Sichuan province. Pause briefly at the viewpoint of Mt Kulha before continuing your journey to Rongdrak. Renowned as the epitome of scenic beauty, Rongdrak Tibetan Villages are celebrated across China for their distinctive architecture. Immerse yourself in the charm of Rongdrak as you encounter ancient watchtowers, dating back over a millennium to the era of Tibetan kings. Known locally as Gyalmo Zawarong, this region captivates with its rich cultural heritage. Conclude your day’s adventures with an overnight stay in Danba.

Day 4: Danba – Lhagong (3730m) 150km. Time Taking = 2.5hrs.

Set out in the morning from Rongdrak to Lhagang, known as Tagong in Chinese. Explore the revered Lhagang Gonpa, also known as Minyak Pel Lhagang Monastery, a Sakya monastery nestled in Lhagang village within the Minyak region of Kham. Renowned throughout the region, Lhagang Monastery houses the revered Jowo statue, believed by many to be of equal significance to the Jowo statue in Lhasa. Marvel at the majestic Zhara Lhatse, the highest peak in the Minyak region of Kham, standing at an impressive elevation of 5820m. With its distinct pointed shape, Mt Zhara Lhatse holds deep cultural significance, intertwined with the tales of Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), adding to its allure and sanctity.

Day 5: Lhagong – Ganzi (3390m) 270km. Time Taking = 4hrs.

In the morning drive to Ganzi, traversing vast grasslands and delving into deep valleys adorned with dense forests. As you approach Ganzi, prepare to be mesmerized by the awe-inspiring vistas from the Nelhu Pass, part of the Ganzi northern mountain range, boasting an elevation of nearly 4600m. Feast your eyes on the breathtaking beauty of Mt Kawa Lhori and its majestic range. Upon arrival in Garzi, immerse yourself in the spiritual ambiance of De Gompa, situated at the heart of the town. Witness numerous pilgrims engaging in the sacred ritual of kora around the temple premises, offering prayers and pujas, a testament to the deeply rooted religious fervor of the region.

Day 6: Ganzi – Derge (3240m) 190km. Time Taking = 4hrs.

In the morning, embark on a scenic drive to Dege via Yulong Lhatse and the Mt Chola pass. Yulong Lhatso, situated near Manigange town approximately 11km away in Derge county, stands as a testament to the forces of glaciation, boasting an altitude exceeding 4500m. Encircled by the Chola ranges, this stunning lake spans an area of 2.72 sq km, with depths reaching up to 15m. The Chola mountains, named for their Tibetan translation meaning “mountain neighboring a lake,” feature five peaks surpassing 5000 meters, along with numerous lakes and verdant meadows. The highest peak, Chola, soars to an impressive height of 6168m. Later in the afternoon, explore Dege Parkhang, also known as the Dege Sutra Printing House, an independent institution housed within a beautifully restored traditional temple. Founded in 1729 by Chogyal Denba Tsering, this revered establishment boasts over 140,000 printing blocks, a vast collection of national cultural relics, and a library containing 830 books comprising 10,000 volumes. Among these treasures lies the last surviving copy of an ancient history of Indian Buddhism. As you wander through this historic site, you’ll witness its perpetual buzz of activity, with townspeople and pilgrims alike circling the premises, though you’re welcome to capture the intricate printing process on camera.

Day 7: Derge – Dzongsar (3600m) 120km. Time Taking = 3hrs.

In the morning, journey alongside the majestic Yangtze River to reach Dzongsar, a significant destination on your itinerary. Founded in 746 by a Bönpo lama, Dzongsar Monastery holds deep historical roots as the birthplace of the Khyentse lineage. Perched atop a promontory with commanding views of the Khamje Valley in Derge, this monastery has evolved into a thriving Tibetan community. Here, you’ll encounter a bustling hub comprising a large monastery, a shedra (monastic college), a clinic, retreat centers, and a school, all dedicated to the study and practice of Dharma. Dzongsar embraces both lay and monastic practitioners, fostering a harmonious environment for spiritual growth. As part of your visit, explore the enchanting Dopuk Valley, renowned for its rich Tibetan heritage showcased through traditional artifacts such as bronze works and black pottery.

Day 8:Dzongsar – Palyul (3050m) 150km. Time Taking = 3hrs.

Set out in the morning alongside the majestic Yangtze River toward Pelyul, where a visit to the renowned Palyul Monastery awaits. This sacred site, constructed by Lhachen Jampa Phuntsog, the inaugural Dharma King of Dege, holds a profound significance. Built upon land adorned with auspicious signs and blessed by the esteemed presence of numerous Mahasiddhas, Palyul Monastery stands as a testament to spiritual reverence and historical legacy.

Day 9: Palyul – Litang (4014m) 300km. Time Taking = 5-6hrs. 

Early in the morning drive through charming Tibetan towns and villages, adorned with exquisitely designed houses that add to the picturesque scenery. Along the way, you’ll be treated to the sight of a stunning turquoise lake, enhancing the natural beauty of the landscape. As you continue your journey, you’ll traverse some of the region’s highest elevated passes before reaching Litang town. Here, pay a visit to the esteemed Litang Gonchen, also known as Litang Chokhor Ling, a prominent Geluk monastery established in 1580 by the Third Dalai Lama, Sonam Gyatso, upon his return to Tibet from Mongolia.

Day 10: Litang – Daocheng – Yading (3300m) 230km. Time Taking = 4hrs.

Travel from Litang to Daocheng or Dabpa, known as “Dabpa” in Tibetan, before continuing your journey to Yading, a national-level reserve located in Dapba or Daocheng County. This sanctuary, revered as a mountain sanctuary and a significant Tibetan pilgrimage site, encompasses three peaks sanctified by the 5th Dalai Lama. These peaks are regarded as emanations of the three bodhisattvas Chenrezig (Avalokiteśvara), Jampayang (Manjushri), and Chanadorje (Vajrapani), with Chenrezig standing as the highest peak, soaring to an impressive altitude of 6032 meters above sea level.

Day 11: Hiking Experience in Yading (3300m)

In the morning, our journey commences with a shuttle bus ride from Yading sanctuary to Lhorong pasture, followed by a scenic walk from Lhorong pasture to Five Color Lake and Milk Lake, typically spanning a duration of 2.5 hours one way.

Day 12: Yading – Dechen (3400m) 320km. Time Taking  = 6-7hrs.

Today’s journey entails a lengthy drive, yet the landscape promises breathtaking beauty—a vast gorge nestled between two immense mountain ranges. Among them, Kawa Garbo, also known as Khawa Karpo or Kawagebo Peak, stands as the tallest mountain in Yunnan Province, China. Situated on the border between Dechen County, Yunnan, and the counties of Zogang and Zayül in the Tibet Autonomous Region, its imposing presence captivates both local residents and pilgrims alike.

Day 13: Dechen – Shangri-la (3276m) 170km. Time Taking = 3hrs.

In the morning, we’ll embark on a journey to Shangri-la, a city situated at the heart of the sacred region where the Yangtze, Mekong, and Salween rivers converge. Upon reaching Shangri-la, our first stop will be the Tibetan Ganden Songtzan Ling Monastery, positioned on the outskirts of the city. This revered monastery has witnessed numerous renovations in recent years, preserving its cultural significance. Additionally, Zhongdian Old Town beckons with its timeless charm and is well worth exploring. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness the locals dancing on the main square of the old town—a delightful spectacle that adds to the city’s vibrant atmosphere.
