The Shaman Festival Tour is a traditional folk religious event that has been celebrated for over 1,400 years. The festival, known as Lurol (ཀླུ་རོལ་) in Tibetan—meaning “enjoying the Nagas”—takes place annually from June 17th to July 25th (according to the Chinese calendar).

Your journey begins with a morning pickup from your hotel in Xining. We will first visit Kumbum Monastery (Chi: Ta’er Si), one of the most important Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in Amdo. After an immersive exploration of its rich history and spiritual significance, we will continue our drive to Rebgong (Chi: Tongren)—a region renowned for its deep-rooted Tibetan culture and art. Upon arrival, settle into a modern homestay, offering an authentic local experience.
The Tibetan Shaman Festival takes place in various villages and monasteries around Rebgong, each with its own unique rituals. Since Rebgong is not only the heart of Tibetan Shamanism but also a renowned center for traditional Thangka painting, we will drive to Langya Village to witness the fascinating shamanic ceremonies. Immerse yourself in the spiritual atmosphere as locals perform sacred rituals to honor mountain deities and seek blessings for health and prosperity.
Return to Rebgong in the evening for another night at our modern homestay.
Today, we will visit Sakyi Village, where another vibrant Tibetan Shaman Festival is taking place. Experience the unique practices, chants, and rituals performed by village shamans. Later in the afternoon, we will explore another festival site near Ringwu Monastery, where you can witness even more shamanic traditions in action.
After a full day of cultural exploration, return to Rebgong for your final night at the modern homestay.
On the last day, we will visit Seng-ge Shong Monasteries, home to some of the finest Thangka painting traditions in all of Tibet. Observe skilled artists meticulously creating these sacred Buddhist artworks, a tradition passed down for centuries.
In the early afternoon, we will drive back to Xining and drop you off at your hotel, marking the end of this unforgettable Tibetan Shamanism Tour.
We hope you enjoyed this unique cultural experience!
The Amdo Monlam Prayer Festival is a significant Tibetan Buddhist celebration, typically held in the Amdo region (present-day Qinghai, Gansu, and parts of Sichuan) in eastern Tibet. The festival features elaborate prayers, ritual ceremonies, and offerings, with monks, pilgrims, and locals gathering to pray for peace, prosperity, and the well-being of all sentient beings. It’s one of the most important spiritual events for Tibetan Buddhists in this region.
The Amdo Monlam Prayer Festival is usually held annually during the Tibetan New Year (Losar), which generally falls in February or March, depending on the lunar calendar. The dates vary each year, so it’s important to check for specific dates before planning your visit.
During the tour, you can expect to witness large-scale prayer ceremonies, vibrant Tibetan Buddhist rituals, traditional chanting, and monastic dances. The event also features intricate mandalas, butter lamp offerings, and the chance to meet pilgrims from all over Tibet and surrounding regions. It’s a deeply spiritual and culturally rich experience, offering a unique glimpse into Tibetan Buddhist practices.
Yes, the Amdo Monlam Prayer Festival tour can be an enriching experience for both first-time and returning visitors to Tibet. While it involves some cultural and spiritual immersion, our guided tours are designed to accommodate different levels of familiarity with Tibetan Buddhism. Our knowledgeable local guides will help explain the significance of the rituals and ensure you have an enjoyable and meaningful experience.
For the tour, it’s important to bring warm clothing, especially if traveling in winter, as the region can get quite cold. Comfortable shoes are recommended for walking, and it’s a good idea to bring a camera to capture the festival’s vibrant colors and scenes (though be mindful of local customs regarding photography). If you’re participating in prayers or rituals, respectful attire and behavior are essential. Additionally, having a basic understanding of Tibetan Buddhist customs can enhance your experience.
